Wishing Away Time

I know it's poor form to wish away my days. To ignore the gift of the present moment for the idea of the weekend to come or the special event on the horizon. I've wished away a lot of time in my life. Although I don't regret it, I've tried to learn the lesson of being present.

But I'll tell you, waking up day after day to -8 and -14 degree temperatures with piles of snow and biting wind makes it really hard to not wish for the warm weather and wonders of spring!

In an attempt to make the best of a record-braking, rotten winter, here's a list of good things about cold weather:

  • I'm fortunate to work from home and not have to go out in the weather.
  • When the sun shines it's super bright because it reflects off all the snow.
  • The delightful scent of wood smoke lofting through the winter air.
  • My kitty loves to cuddle for the extra warmth.
  • My sweet husband pre-heats the bed each night with the electric blanket.
  • I have an excuse to drink coffee all day long...for the warmth.
  • I have a warm, cozy home with more creature comforts that I can list.
  • Bundling up to go outside makes me feel like I've really accomplished something!

I know there are more but these come to mind as I anticipate the spring thaw while doing my best to show gratitude for every precious moment.

All You Need is LOVE!

Heart Magnet Gift Set
"All you need is is all you need."

The Beatles, of course. I never realized how many of The Beatles songs were love songs until I went on a love song search for our wedding last year. Say what you like about the long haired British invaders turned longer haired hippies...they were all about love!

I'm fortunate. I've been blessed in this life with a lot of love, starting with my parents, followed by my friends and ultimately with my husband. I'm sure there's a lot more love to come my way and even more to give.

The beauty of love is that it multiples. It's like the light of a candle...when you lend your flame to someone else to light their candle, the brightness of your flame isn't diminished. In fact, it makes the whole world brighter as the flames multiply one after another!

And so it is with love.

I know Valentine's Day is a commercial holiday created to sell stuff...llike those adorable magnets pictured up there! {wink wink} But what everyone took the day to put as much love into the world as their hearts can muster. What if every day were Valentine's Day and more and more people approached their lives from a place of love rather than fear and competition.

I decided in this week leading up to Valentine's Day I'm going to make a concerted effort to perform gestures of love and kindness. Large or small, I honestly think these gestures can make someone's day, lift their spirits and encourage more love and understanding in our world.

Who's with me? What has someone done for you? What have you done for someone else? Give me your best ideas in the comments below!!!

Waking Up

I woke this morning at 6:08 a.m., before my alarm but it was okay. It didn't bother me. You know why? It was the sun! The actual sun! Breaking through the curtain every so slightly to wake me up!

We live in the Midwest, in the Chicago suburbs to be exact. Thanks to the Arctic Vortex we are having the most brutal winter I can remember. The subzero temps, even more subzero wind chill and add to those the long dark winter's enough to wear on even the most positive spirit!

I can't even express how happy waking up this morning to the sun casting a golden light through the window makes me! As the daily hours of sunlight grow it gives me hope for the spring to come.

It's gone now, swallowed by gloomy gray winter clouds. But that's okay. For that brief moment this morning, before my alarm I was given hope!

49 days and counting!!! I'm making my list of outdoor activities now...what's on your list?

2013 Rewind

 Happy New Year!
Wow! I can't believe it's been over a year since my last blog post...shame on me! I promise I have a really great explanation, really I do! The last 12 months have been a whirlwind of excitement and activity. I know, I know...I should have been sharing all of them with you! Again, shame on me!

Last year, on Valentine's Day, my then boyfriend proposed to me. I knew a proposal was coming and that it would be a 'complete surprise when I least expected it', that's what he said every time someone mentioned the M-word. Let's just say, he's not THAT guy! He would never propose on Valentine's Day. So, he got me! He caught me when I was least expecting it and completely surprised me. Of course, I said 'yes'...squealed 'yes' was more like it!

That set into motion the wedding planning. We agreed we wanted either a spring or autumn wedding...we both hate the heat and humidity of summer and a Chicago winter just poses too many stressful obstacles. We came down to Autumn 2013 and soon had a date of September 28th!

I did a lot of DIY projects for our wedding. I had this whimsical image in my head of what our wedding would be. The ceremony would be outdoors, of course...with an indoor backup plan if the weather didn't cooperate. As it turned out, there was some wind but what did I expect when my decor centered around pinwheels?

The whole planning process proved to me that Andy and I are meant to be. We worked so well together. He helped me bring all of my ideas to fruition and really helped me stay sane. Long story short, thanks to the help of our parents, many truly amazing friends and our fantastic vendors we had the wedding of my dreams. I say 'my dreams' because it truly was exactly as I pictured in my mind, from the venue to the ceremony, the decorations to the cupcakes...exactly!

My husband and I are both in our 40's, neither of us have ever been married. The history of our friendship and romance is for another day but I'll have to tell it because it's a great story! Our ceremony was a beautiful expression of our love and the reception was a celebration of our new life together. It. Was. Perfect.

So, here we are, the happy couple with our official, signed marriage license!
Yes, those goofy expressions are what we look like all the time...we are just this ridiculous!

As for my Etsy shop, 2013 was a great year! And I have so many new ideas for 2014. I introduced earrings to match a few of my pieces and created a couple of sets. I think I'll be doing more of those this year. And I tested out a few new ideas on my unsuspecting friends and family for Christmas gifts. Stay tuned...lost of new stuff coming this year.

Here are a few of my newest listings.
 Amethyst Earrings Fluorite Bracelet
 Fire Agate Necklace

So, that's what's been up with me. What are you looking forward to in 2014?

Memorable Words

Art Sign from cellardesigns
I first heard this quote years ago as I was beginning my journey of soul searching. It has come back to me from time to time and when I saw it today I was inspired to share.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
